KUNO WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Kuno Wildlife Sanctuary is located at Vijaypur and Sheopur Tehsils in the district of Sheopur in Madhya
Pradesh. The sanctuary is named after the Kuno River, a tributary of the Chambal River, which flows
through the middle of the sanctuary. In the proximity of the sanctuary an ancient seventh century fort is
located along the banks of the Kuno River in Palpur. Hence, the Kuno sanctuary is also popularly
referred to as Kuno Palpur Sanctuary.

Flora
Forest type: arid deciduous forest mixed together with patches of grasslands
Tree & grasses: Kher, Haldoo, Kardhai, Mahua, Gurjan, Bel, Tendu, Guner, Phulara, Lumpy, Doob, etc.
Fauna
Tiger, Sambar, Leopard, Chital, Bear, Blue bull, Indian monitor, Panther, Python, Cobra, Chausingha and
many more.
Kuno Palpur Sanctuary has been selected as the most suitable forest reserve for the transferring and
preserving of some of the free-ranging population of Asiatic lions from Gir forest in Gujarat.
Avian Fauna
Golden orioles, Peacock, Jangli, Drongo, Bhura, Phakta, Kala Teetar, Rollers, Tree pie, etc.
Getting there
The closest airport and railway station to Kuno Wildlife Sanctuary is at Gwalior (approximately 140Km
away). The other nearest railheads are located at Sheopur (75Km), Shivpuri (55Km) and Jhansi. Nearest
bus terminals are located at Sesaipura (about 15Km away) and Pohari.
Tourist Information
Forest Rest House at Palpur, PWD Rest House at Vijaypur and Kuno PWD Rest House at Sesaipura can be
availed for accommodation with prior bookings.
Diesel or petrol four wheelers that are less than five years old are allowed for safari expeditions inside
the sanctuary. Sun Temple, Cave Temple, Jal Temple, Kedareshwar temple, Gwalior Fort, Palpur Fort, etc
are some of the famous places of interest located in and around Kuno Palpur Sanctuary.
