KUTCH DESERT WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Kutch Desert wildlife sanctuary in Gujarat, exhibits one of the largest seasonal saline wetland regions in the world that have water depth approximately between 0.5m and 1.5m. However, between October and November the water dries out and the whole region is transformed into saline desert. Notification: Wildlife sanctuary: February 1986

Flora
Khijado, lai, kerdo, hermo baval, mithi jar, kahri jar, gugal, bokhano, prosopis chilensis and thor.

Fauna
Wolf, jackal, bluebull, rufous-tailed hare, wild boar, chinkara, Indian porcupine, mongoose, spiny-tailed lizards, etc.

Avian Faun
Flagship Species: Greater Flamingo
Other species: lesser flamingo, black-necked storks, brahmini duck, Indian cormorant, sandpiper, plovers, stints, shoveller and others.

Getting There
The closest bus terminal is nearly 20 km away at Rapar. The nearest airport and railway station are at Bhuj approximately 110 km away. Another nearby airport is at Ahmedabad approximately 320 km away via Radhanpur situated Adesar.

Tourist Information
Tourism Department Guest House located at Dholavira can be availed for accommodation with prior reservations. Alternatively, the incoming visitors can also find accommodation at the Jain Dharamshala, Panchayat Rest House, PWD Guest House and some private hotels located at Rapar.
The northern edge of Kutch sanctuary is a part of the international Indo-Pak border. So it is strictly patrolled by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF). As such the areas of the sanctuary after the India Bridge at Black hill (Kala dungar) at Khavda are closed to the general public. Researchers and tourists have to secure special permission from the BSF for venturing here.
Kutch Desert wildlife sanctuary also encompasses the popular ‘Flamingo City’, which is the largest breeding ground for myriads of Greater Flamingos. The sanctuary also contains the excavated city of Dholavira belonging to the Harappan civilization and fossilized forests and trees buried in the rocks pertaining to the Jurassic and Cretaceous era.
