LANDFALL ISLAND WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Landfall Island wildlife sanctuary is located on Landfall Island, which is situated in the Andaman
Islands in the Bay of Bengal. Landfall Island is the northern most island in Andaman and Nicobar
Island group. Landfall Island sanctuary was established in the year 1987 to protect the wildlife and
the bio-diversity of the Landfall Island and its adjoining regions. It is spread over a sprawling area of
about 29.48 sq km.
Flora and fauna
Tropical rain forest and mangroves occupy major part of the sanctuary. The primary flora species of
the region comprises P. tectorius, Pandanus andamanensium, coconut and palm trees.
Various types of animals both land and aquatic, can be seen in this sanctuary. It is also home to
different rare and colourful bird species.
Getting there
Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair, approximately 226km away, is the nearest airport
to Landfall Island wildlife sanctuary. From Port Blair the tourists can hire ferries to reach this
sanctuary.
Tourist Information
There are literally no staying options within the island. The tourists have to find accommodation in
Port Blair and visit this sanctuary from there by making a one-day trip. Several tour operators
organize trip to Landfall Island sanctuary from Port Blair for the tourists.
The sanctuary is bound by beaches on all sides so offers great opportunities for different water
sports.
This sanctuary is home to aka-chari tribe. Several other aboriginal tribes inhabit the forest area.
Most of these tribes resides in remote areas of the forest and do not welcome any interaction with
the outside people. Therefore, visitors are advised not to approach them without the intervention of
forest guides.
