LIPA-ASRANG SANCTUARY
Located in Himachal Pradesh, Lipa-Asrang Sanctuary is believed to be one of the few sanctuaries in the
country which is home to the feral yaks. Most parts of the sanctuary are cold barren desert.
Notifications: Wildlife sanctuary: 1962; Re-notified as wildlife sanctuary: 27 March, 1974.
Flora
Dry coniferous forest, arid alpine scrub, western Himalayan temperate forest, dwarf juniper scrubs, arid
broad leaved and coniferous forest.
Fauna
Leopard, Feral Yak, Blue Sheep, Goral, Ibex, Musk Deer, Himalayan Black Beer, Brown Bear, etc.
Avian Fauna
There are few birds in this sanctuary. Pheasant, jungle fowl, cock, owl, etc. are some of the birds that
can be sighted here.
Getting there
The nearest railway station and airport to Lipa-Asrang sanctuary is in Shimla. From here one can easily
get buses or cabs to reach the sanctuary. The forest reserve is also well connected by roads to other
important towns and cities of the Himachal Pradesh and nearby states. Motorable road is upto Jangi
village, after that the tourists have to trek the remaining distance.
Tourist Information
Most part of the sanctuary is closed to the tourists. Inner Line permits are mandatory. There are
practically no staying options within the forest. Few rest houses are available outside the reserve.
Besides animal spotting, trekking, nature walk and wildlife photography are the other major pastime of
the tourists here.
Smoking, drinking alcohol, carrying pets and combustible items inside the sanctuary is strictly
prohibited.
