Madhav National Park – Madhya Pradesh

Madhav National Park is located in Gwalior’s Shivpuri District in the north-west part of Madhya Pradesh. The park has a total area of about 354 km².

Trivia
The park was previously a hunting ground of the Gwalior Royal family and later the British Empire. It was declared a national park in the year 1959. There are two famous lakes located in the park, namely Madhav Lake and Sakhya Sagar Lake. These lakes were created in 1918 and supports different types of biodiversities.

Flora
The vegetation of the park is mostly dry, mixed deciduous. Flat Grasslands are mostly found around the lake. The chief trees of the park comprises of Dhawda, Tendu, Kerdhai, Palash, Khair, etc.

Fauna
The park is home to a varied species of fauna which include Sambar, Blackbuck, Nilgai, Chinkara, Tiger, Four-Horned Antelope, Chital, Wild Boar, Sloth Bear, etc. Marsh crocodiles are found in the Sakhya Sagar Lake.

Avian-fauna
The park is bird lovers’ delight. Here several colourful and rare bird species such as Pond Heron, Red Wattled Lapwing, White-Breasted Kingfisher, Large Pied Wagtail, etc. can be found.

Getting there
The nearest railhead is located at Jhansi about 101 km away. The closest airport is in Gwalior, which is approximately 112 km away. Regular bus services connect Madhav National Park with Ujjain, Bhopal, Indore, Sawai Madhopur, Gwalior and Jhansi.

General Information
Several less expensive lodges and rest houses are available in and around the park. Rest house, which is maintained by the state tourism department, also offers good quality accommodation facilities. The tourists can visit the George Castle and the Shooting Box (viewing lodge build by the Scindias) for having a majestic view of the park.
