MAENAMA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Maenama Wildlife Sanctuary is nestled on the Maenam-Tendong ridge in the state of Sikkim. The sanctuary is located about 65 km south of Gangtok. It was declared a wildlife sanctuary in the year 1987. The name of the sanctuary in local dialect means “treasure-house of medicines”.

How to Get There
The nearest airport to Maenama Wildlife Sanctuary is at Gangtok. From Gangtok the visitors can hire buses, taxis or private vehicles to reach Maenama Sanctuary. The sanctuary can also be approached from Ravangla, which is approximately 26 km away. Regular bus and taxi services are available from Namchi to Maenam.

Tourist Information
There are no staying options within the sanctuary. Different accommodation facilities are available in Ravangla and in the towns and villages around the sanctuary. The trekkers can opt to stay in tented camps. Maenama Sanctuary is trekkers’ paradise. The best season for trekking is between March and May. While trekking always follow the designated trails so that one does not end up getting lost. Carry enough water, snacks and proper trekking gears along with you. Wear comfortable, warm clothes and proper shoes while going for trekking expeditions.
The sanctuary is a ‘no plastic zone’. So bring back all your waste and batteries, so that they can be properly disposed outside the sanctuary. Avoid buying endangered plant or animal products from anyone in the forest. Avoid using firewood for cooking, lighting or heating inside the sanctuary. Instead use kerosene or bottled gas for the purpose. Maenam Gumpha, a historical Buddhist Monastery and a Lord Shiva temple, are two religious places inside the sanctuary where the visitors can visit.
