Mahatma Gandhi, the man I admire (Class 8)
Mahatma Gandhi is the man I admire the most. Gandhiji was conferred the title ‘Mahatma’ for his
glorious works and achievements. His full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He was born on
2nd October 1869, at Porbondor in Gujarat.
After finishing his basic education in India he went to study law in England. After acquiring his degree in
Law he came back to India and began his first practice in Mumbai High Court. After sometime he went
to South Africa to practice law. There, he, along with the South African natives, started a new type of
non-violence movement, under the name Satyagraha, to fight against the tyranny of the Europeans.
When he came back to India, he introduced the similar type of non-violence revolution to fight against
the British rule in India. Later this movement came to be known as Non-cooperation Movement (1921)
and Quit India Movement (1942). With his famous clarion call “do or die” he soon became one of the
prominent leaders of the freedom fighters in India.
India gained her independence under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi on 15th August, 1947. Soon
after the independence, Gandhiji was shot dead by a young man named Nathuram Godse, on 30th
January 1948. Though he is dead, he is still alive among the people through his inspirational messages
and novel works. Mahatma Gandhi is loved and respected not only by the people of India but also by
many people around the world.
