MAHAVIR SWAMI SANCTUARY

Situated in the state of Uttar Pradesh, Mahavir Swami Sanctuary provides an entryway for Bundelkhand area rendered by Rani Laxmi Bai. The sanctuary derives its name from Mahavir Swami, an eminent Jain philosopher.

Flora
Forest type: tropical arid deciduous forest.
Trees: Salai, Teak, Bamboo, Aola, Kulu, Sal, Babul, Mango, Kalam, Dhawda, Khair, Bel, Tendu, etc.

Fauna
Important species: Barking deer and four-horned antelope.
Other species: Leopard, Wild Boar, Hyena, Sambar, Blue Bull, Bear and others.

Avian Fauna
Mahavir Swamy Wildlife Sanctuary is home to about 37 species of migratory birds and nearly 147 species of resident birds. Jungle Fowl, Peafowl, Bulbul, Hawks, Owls, etc are some of the other bird species.

Getting there
The closest airport and railway station are located at Jhansi, approximately 125km away. Jhansi is an important transport centre near the sanctuary. Tourists can easily get bus and taxi services from here to reach Mahavir Swami Sanctuary.

Tourist Information
A forest rest house in Deogarh offer accommodation facilities to the incoming tourists. There are many other resorts and hotels around the sanctuary where the visitors can opt to stay. The tourists can contact the Divisional Director, Social Forestry, stationed at Lalitpur for any queries or information on the wildlife sanctuary.
Malthone Fort, Fort Khurai, Colony Mandir, Risala Hanuman Temple, Neelkantheshwar, Govind Sagar Lake, etc are some of the popular places of interest located in and around the sanctuary.
