MALABAR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Malabar Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Chakkittappara and Koorachundu revenue villages of Quilandy Taluk in the state of Kerala. Nestled along the boundaries of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, this sanctuary is a vital part of the Wayanad Elephant Reserve under Project Elephant. The sanctuary was established in August, 2010.

Flora
Vegetation covers: West-coast Semi evergreen, West-coast Tropical Evergreen, Southern Hill-top Evergreen forests, Southern Moist Mixed Deciduous, Marshy grasslands and Grasslands.
Trees: Garcinia malabarica, Coffea crassifolia, Eugenia argentea, Syzygium stocksii, Humboldtia brunonis var. rakthapushpa, etc.

Fauna
Tiger, brown palm civet, leopard, elephants, Malabar spiny dormouse, sloth bear, gaur, monitor lizard, King Cobra, Geckos, etc.

Avian Fauna
Malabar parakeet, oriental darter, Kerala laughing thrush, pied harrier, Nilgiri flycatcher, white- bellied treepie, oriental broad-billed roller, etc.

Getting There
Koilandy Railway Station (approximately 50 km) is the closest railway station to Malabar Wildlife Sanctuary. The nearest airport is the Karipur International Airport located about 40 km away at Calicut. The nearby bus terminals are located at Kozhilod and at Calicut.

Tourist Information
There are staying options at Malabar Sanctuary. Hence, the visitors can find accommodation in the hotels and guest houses in the nearby town of Koilandy.
No vehicles are permitted inside the sanctuary. No safaris are organized within the sanctuary by the forest department. However, they conduct ecotourism such as Urakkuzhy water fall at Kakkayam, adventure trekking, Peruvannamuzhy the dam, the garden, Indian Institute of Spices Research and animal rehabilitation centre for the incoming tourists.
