MANALI SANCTUARY
Manali Sanctuary situated in the state of Himachal Pradesh, starts behind the Manali town and reaches
up to the mountains. It was established in the year 1954.
Flora
Forest covers: alpine pastures, sub tropical pine, western mixed coniferous and moist temperate
deciduous forest.
Tree species: Deodar, willow, fir, walnut, horse chestnut, robinia, maple and poplar.
Fauna
Asiatic black bear, snow leopard, Himalayan ibex, musk deer, barking deer, jungle cat, brown bear,
pythons, cobra, etc.
Avian Fauna
Himalayan monal, chakor, western tragopan, snow pigeon, bar throated minla, green backed tit,
Himalayan snow cock, snow partridge and many more.
Getting There
The closest railway station to the sanctuary is at Joginder Nagar, around 95km away from Kullu. The
nearest airport to Manali Sanctuary is located approximately 52km from Manali at Bhuntar. Manali is
only 2km away from the sanctuary by road and is well connected with regular transport services with
Kukku and other major cities and towns of Himachal Pradesh.
Tourist Information
Very few accommodation facilities are available within the sanctuary with prior reservations. Visitors
can also opt to stay in camps at Gallant and Lambadug during the summer season. Different budget
hotels and resorts are available in Manali.
Wildlife viewing, nature trails, bird watching and trekking are popular things to do in this sanctuary. May
to June is the ideal time for trekking here.
Few soft drinks and snacks’ stalls are available within the sanctuary. However, feeding of wild animals
and littering inside the forest are strictly prohibited.
