MANDAGADDE BIRD SANCTUARY

Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary is located in the state of Karnataka on a tiny island in River Tunga. It is approximately 30km from Shimoga.

Flora
Dense forest and different medicinal and flowering plants.

Avian Fauna
Little cormonant, median egret, snake-bird, median egret, etc. Myriads of migratory birds come from numerous places to this sanctuary for breeding during the month of May. The breeding cycle gets completed by October when all the birds along with their young ones return home. In August, which happens to be the peak breeding season, almost five thousand birds visit this reserve.

Getting there
Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary falls on the way to Theerthahalli from Shimoga. It is situated about 345km from Bangalore city and around 150km away from Mangalore. The sanctuary is well connected with different towns and cities of Karnataka with KSRTC and private bus services. The closest railway station is at Shimoga and the nearest airport is at Mangalore.

Tourist Information
Accommodation within the Mandagadde sanctuary is very limited. Hence, tourists who plan to stay overnight in this reserve will have to carry their own tents. Numerous comfortable and standard staying options are available at Shimoga.
This bird sanctuary is also an excellent picnic spot. Boating is the best way to explore this sanctuary which is organized by the state forest department. The sanctuary has a watchtower which is an ideal place to spot different species of birds.
Elephant training camp at Sakrebyle and the Gajanur Dam are two popular tourist spots on the way to Mandagadde sanctuary.
