MEHAO WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary is located close to the Roing town in the state of Arunachal Pradesh. It was established in the year 1980.

Flora
Forest type: Temperate broad leave forest, sub-tropical and temperate forests, tropical evergreen forests, temperate conifer forest and bamboo forest.

Trees: Albizia Mollis, Beach almond, English Yew, Cophis Teeta, Quercus Griffithii, Cotton Tree, etc.

Fauna
Tiger, Leopard, Mongoose, Spotted Linsang, Otter, Musk Deer, Snow Leopard, Mishmi Takin, Hoolock, Black Krait, Himalayan Cat Snake, Green Whip Snake, etc.

Avian Fauna
Great Pied Hornbill, Black Napped Oriole, Wren, Blue Wing Laughing Thrust, White Throated Red Start, Alpine Choug and others.

Getting there
Tinsukia railway station is the nearest railhead to Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary. The closest airport is at Dibrugarh. Roing is also connected to Itanagar by air through Pawan Hans Helicopter Service. Roing is the closest main transport centre to the sanctuary from where one can easily hire buses and taxis.

Tourist Information
Tourists can find accommodation in the Circuit House, Forest and PWD Inspection Bungalows and hotels that are located in and around the sanctuary.

Both India and foreign tourists have to obtain Inner Line Permit from the Resident Commissioner for venturing into the forest. Trekking, bird watching and nature trail are major activities of the visitors here. Trekking route from the Abango village and Roing town offer unique trekking experiences. Mehao Lake and the Sally Lake are ideal place for wildlife spotting. A watchtower and a Forest Department office are located close to the Mehao Lake. The Adi and the Idu Mishmi tribes dwell in the surrounding areas of the Mehao sanctuary.
