MELGHAT TIGER RESERVE - Maharashtra

Melghat Tiger Reserve is situated in the Melghat Forests in the Amravati district of Maharashtra. The reserve is nestled among the Satpura hill ranges and is spread over a sprawling area of about 1677 sq km.

History of the reserve
The reserve was first established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1967. It was in the year 1974, this area was given a Tiger reserve status.

Flora
Teak, Bamboo, Marda , Crepe Myrtle, Gooseberry and many more.

Fauna
Royal Bengal Tiger and Indian bison are important animals of the reserve. As per the last tiger census report, there are approximately 80 tigers in the Melghat reserve. The other mammals include Leopard, Sambar Deer, Nilgiri, Wild Dog, Small Indian Civet, Porcupines, Flying Squirrels, Langurs, Hyenas, Fox, Barking Deer etc.
Reptiles: Forest Calotes, Fresh Water Turtles, Fat-tailed Geckos, Green Vine Snake, Cobra, Python and many more.

Avian fauna
Rufous Treepies, Crested Serpent Eagle, Vulture, Golden Oriole, Gold-Mantled Leafbird, Jungle Bush Quail, Black-rumped Woodpecker, Parakeets, Crested Larks, Great Bustard Stork-billed Kingfisher and so on.

Getting there
The closest railway station is about 110km away at Badnera. The nearby airports are at Akola (about 160km away) and Nagpur (approximately 260km away). Closest bus terminals are at Chikaldara (about 25km away) and Amravati (about 100km away) and Nagpur (230km away).

Tourist tips
Inside the Melghat Tiger Reserve one can find accommodation at Semadoh Tourist Complex, which is managed by Forest Department. Outside the reserve proper lodging facilities are available at Kolkaz, Dhakna and Chikaldara.

Forest fire is a common problem of the Melghat Reserve. Hence avoid smoking and while dismantling your camps extinguish the last timber of your campfire. If you come across a predator while trekking, then do not panic or start running. Stay still and slowly move away. For camping and trekking, permit has to be obtained from the Field Director.
