MOUNT ABU WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary is nestled in the Sirohi district in the Aravali Ranges in Rajasthan. It extends from 300m to 1722m at Gurashikhar, the highest mountain peak in the Aravali Ranges.
About the park
The area used to be a summer resort of the Rajput princes. It was notified a wildlife sanctuary in the year 1960. The sanctuary is around 7 km in length and only 300m wide.
Fauna
The park is home to different animal species which include leopard, chinkara, sloth bear, wild boar and langur.
Avian Fauna
There are about 250 species of avian-fauna in the park. Some of the prominent birds here are grey jungle fowl, pheasant, etc.
Flora
Xeromorphic subtropical thorn forests are found at the foothills of the mountain. Sub-tropical evergreen forests exist near the riverside and in the higher elevation of the sanctuary. The bamboo forests are found in the south-western areas of Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary. The important floras of the sanctuary comprise of different orchids, algae, bryophytes, climbers, etc. The sanctuary is rich in tuberous plants and herbal medicinal plants.
How to get there
Udaipur airport is the nearest airport and is only 185 km away. The closest railhead is in Abu Road, almost 28 km from the main city. Regular taxi and state transport bus services are available from Abu Road and Jaipur to the park. The sanctuary is well connected by road with Udaipur, Delhi, Bundi and Ajmer. National Highway No. 24 passes close to the park.
General tips
There are no accommodation facilities within the park. Good quality lodging facilities are available in the towns and villages around the sanctuary. Beside sight-seeing, the tourists can also enjoy trekking, row-boating, motorboats and other activities that are organized for the visitors. Dilwara Temples, Nakki Lake, Achaleshwar Temple and Achalgarh Fort are some of the popular tourists spots located close to the park.
