Muhammad - founder of Islam religion (Class 6)
Muhammad was the founder of the religion of Islam. He is regarded as an important prophet in Islam.
He was born in 570 AD in the month of ‘Rabi’al-awwal’ in Mecca in Saudi Arabia.
Muhammad became orphan at a very early age. He was brought up by his uncle Abu Talib. He worked as
a merchant and shepherd. Once he went for a trading journey to Syria and there he met a Christian
monk named Bahira. At the age of 25 years he married a 40 years old widow, named Khadijah. Later on
he married twelve more women.
After getting dissatisfied with his life, Muhammad went to meditate in a cave on Mount Hira. There he
indulged himself in different spiritual practices. After three years when he came out of the cave he
started preaching monotheism or ‘God is one’ to the people. He instructed the people not to worship
idols and other gods and deities but worship only Allah. He also proclaimed himself to be a messenger of
Allah (god). At first he succeeded in gaining few followers. However later on, his teachings met with
opposition from some of the tribes of Mecca. In 622 he was also forced to flee to Medina along with his
followers. This particular event in Islam is referred to as ‘Hijra’. It marks the commencement of the
Islamic calendar (Hirji).
In Medina he managed to unite the conflicting tribes of the region. Then he succeeded in conquering
Mecca after fighting for eight years with the tribes of Mecca. Muhammad died at the age of 63 years on
8 th June, 632. All his teachings are outlined in Quran, which is the most sacred scripture of the Muslims.
