MURTI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Murti Wildlife Sanctuary is situated on the bank of the Murti River in the state of West Bengal,
approximately 60km away from Jalpaiguri and about 8km from Chalsa.
Wildlife
The sanctuary is home to diverse species of flora and fauna. Elephant, Indian buffalo (gaur), Gharials
and different species of Deer are some of the prominent wildlife species that can be seen here.
Getting there
The nearest railway station and bus terminal are located at Chalsa. The main long distance rail
terminals are Siliguri and Jalpaiguri railway stations.
National Highway 31 passes through Chalsa. From Siliguri the tourists can hire Bhutan Govt. Buses,
North Bengal State Transport Corporation Buses, Private Buses or Mini Buses to reach Murti via
Chalsa. Alternatively one can hire private car or taxi to reach Murti Wildlife Sanctuary from Siliguri.
Bagdogra airport is the closest airport to Murti sanctuary. From the airport the tourists can hire
vehicles to reach Siliguri and then pursue the above road route.
Tourist Information
Forest bungalow situated on the bank of River Murti offers quality accommodation to the visitors.
From this bungalow one can spot other wild animals during the early hours of the morning and
evening. Sometimes elephants frequent the areas around the bungalow; hence it is advisable for the
visitors not to venture outside the bungalow after sunset. Different private accommodation options
are also available at Murti.
The river banks of Murti are a perfect place to spot the gharials and different colourful birds.
Panjhora River, located on the other side of river Murti is a popular picnic spot during the winter.
Gorumara National Park and Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary are other popular places of interest in
the vicinity of Murti sanctuary.
