NAGARHOLE NATIONAL PARK – Karnataka

Nagarhole National Park is spread in two districts of Karnataka - Mysore and Kodagu district. It is spread over an area of about 643.39 km and forms a part of Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The park is also known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park.

History of the park
The park was previously a private hunting ground of the kings of the Wodeyar dynasty of Mysore. It was declared a sanctuary in the year 1955. It was deemed a national park in 1988. The park derives its name from the Nagarahole River that flows through the park. The river has a winding shape like the cobra snake.

Fauna
Elephant is the most prominent animal in the park. The other animals include leopard, tiger, sloth bear, wild dog, four-horned antelope, barking deer, wild boar, bonnet macaque, mongoose, leopard- cat, porcupine, pangolin, etc.

Avian Fauna
Rare bird species such as oriental white ibis, darters, red headed vulture and greater grey headed fish eagle can be sighted here. The other avian fauna species of Nagarhole National Park are Nilgiri wood-pigeon, Greater spotted eagle, Oriental white-backed vulture, Indian peafowl, Indian robin, Yellow legged green pigeon, etc.

Flora
The important tree species of the region are Sandalwood, Teak, Silver oak, Rosewood, Kadam, Cotton tree, Indian Kino Tree, Axlewood, Beechwood, Indian gooseberry, etc.

Getting there
Veeranahosahalli is the prime entrance to the park. Murkal and Nagarhole Forest Department office are other gates of the park. Regular bus and car services connect Hunsur with the Rajiv Gandhi National Park. The closest airport is in Bangalore and the nearby railhead is Mysore.

General information
Accommodation is available in the Nagarhole Forest Guest house with prior booking. Many other guest houses, lodges and resorts are available at Kutta and Murkal. Trekking and safari rides are popular tourist activities inside the park area.
