With area coverage of about 356,000 hectares, Nagarjunsagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve is believed to
be the largest tiger reserve in the country. The reserve is situated in Andhra Pradesh and is spread
over five districts of the state which include Kurnool, Mahboobnagar, Guntur, Nalgonda and
Prakasam.
History of the park
Before independence the reserve area was used as hunting reserve for the royals of the Hyderabad.
It was notified a sanctuary in the 1978. It was declared a tiger reserve in 1983. The reserve was
rechristened Rajiv Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary in the year 1992.
Flora
Southern tropical dry mixed deciduous forest, Deccan thorn scrub forests and Hardwickia forest are
the prominent forest cover here. Important floras include axlewood, Salai, silkplants, teak, anjan
tree, etc.
Fauna
Tiger, sloth bear, leopard, wild dog, black buck, chausingha, pangolin, cobra, mugger, etc.
Aviana fauna
Nagarjunsagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve is home to almost 150 bird species, which include peafowl,
grey hornbill, etc.
Tourist information
Cottages and guesthouses within the reserve offer quality accommodation to the tourists. Outside
the reserve, accommodation facilities are available at Srisailum, Mannanur, Bairluty and
Nagarjunasagar.
The average temperature here is around 42°C. So it is always advisable to wear light cotton clothes.
The tourists are required to obtain entry permit from the field director. Night driving, carrying pets
and inflammable items inside the park are strictly prohibited. It is advisable to maintain silence
during the safari. Or else, one would miss the chance of seeing the tigers.
How to reach
The closest airport and railway station is at Hyderabad, approximately 210 km away. Another nearby
railhead is at Markapur (about 85 km away). The nearest major bus terminals are at Kurnool (about
190 km), Mannanur (85 km) and Guntur (about 220 km).
