NALSAROVAR BIRD SANCTUARY
Situated in the Ahmedabad and Surendranagar districts of Gujarat, Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary is
believed to be the largest water bird sanctuary in India. It is an important habitat for a huge number of
waterfowls in the country.

Flora
Vegetation type: grasslands, reeds, aquatic and medicinal plants.
Aquatic plant species: Eleocharis palustris, Vallisnaria, Potamogeton, Ruppia, Chara, Cyperus sp., etc.
Fauna
Mongoose, jackal, wild ass, jungle cat, blackbuck, hyena, Indian fox and wolf.
Avian Fauna
Grey-lag geese, waterfowls, open-bill stork, cranes, wading birds, glossy ibis, fishing eagles, ibises, coots,
harriers, cranes, etc.
Getting there
The closest airport is in Ahmedabad, about 64km away. The closest railway terminuses are located at
Viramgam (40km) and Ahmedabad. The closet bus terminals to Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary are at Sanand
(42km) and Viramgam.
Tourist Information
Tourist complex, Forest Department rest houses and Forest Bungalows within the sanctuary offer
comfortable staying facilities to the tourists. Alternatively, the visitors can opt to stay in Ahmedabad
from where they can make a day trip to the sanctuary.
Bird watching, boating, horse riding and angling are the prime tourist pastimes here. While visiting the
sanctuary preferably carry a bird book, camera and a binocular with you. Hiring a birdwatcher or a local
guide can help you identifying the different species of migratory and resident birds.
Swimming in the lake water is not allowed. However, refrain from visiting the bird reserve on Sundays as
it may be crowded with local tourists.
