Namdapha National Park is located in the Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh. It is nestled in
the Eastern Himalayan sub-region at an altitude of about 200m to 4,500m above sea level. The total
area coverage of the park is approximately 1,850 sq km.
About the park
The area was deemed a wildlife sanctuary in the year 1972. It was established as a national park and
tiger reserve in 1983. In terms of area, the park is the third largest national park in the country.
Flora
The sanctuary is home to some of the rarest species of flora. For instance, certain kind of timber
species such as Abies delavayi and Pinus Merkusii are only found here in the country. Blue Vanda, an
endangered orchid, is also found here only. Mishimi Teeta, a popular local medicinal plant that the
locals use for treating various diseases, exists here. Almost 150 species of timber can be seen here.
Fauna
Namdapha sanctuary is the only place in the world where the four feline big cat species namely
Leopard, Tiger, Clouded Leopard and Snow Leopard can be found. The other fauna species of
Namdapha National Park are pig-tailed Macaque, Assamese Macaque, Hoolock Gibbons, Ape, Black
Bear, Elephants, Indian Bison, etc.
Avian Fauna
Variety of colourful and rare bird species can be spotted here. Some of them are Jungle Fowls,
Pheasants, Great Indian Hornbills, White winged Wood Ducks, etc.
Getting there
The nearest passenger railway station is Margherita Railway Station (about 91 km away). The nearby
long distance railway station is at Tinsukia (141 km). The closest airport is at Mohanbari in Dibrugarh
(approximately 182 km away). The nearest bus terminal Miao is also the entry point of the park.
Arunachal Pradesh State Transport Service and Assam State Transport Corporation runs regular bus
services from Dibrugarh and Guwahati to Miao.
Accommodation
Inspection bungalows and Government-run circuit houses in Namdapha and tourist huts, Forest rest
house, dormitory and tourist lodge in Deban offer quality accommodation against prior booking.
