Nestled in the higher altitude of Himalayas around the famous peak of Nanda Devi, Nanda Devi
National Park is home to a variety of wildlife, habitat and vegetation species. The park covers an
area of about 630.33 km 2.
History of the park
The national park is situated in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district. The area was declared a sanctuary
in the year 1939. It was deemed a national park in 1982. In the year 1988, along with the Valley of
Flowers, the park was declared a World Heritage Site. It has also been declared a Biosphere Reserve
by the Indian Government.
Flora
Rhododendron, birch, juniper, alpine, lichens, prone mosses and fir are the prime flora species found
here. Sub-Tropical and Sub-Montane forest, Alpine and Sub-Alpine forest, Semi Evergreen and
Tropical Wet Evergreen forest, Sub-Tropical region and Temperate forest are endemic vegetation
that covers the sanctuary.
Fauna
Mainland serow, Himalayan musk deer, Goral, Himalayan tahr, Snow leopard, Himalayan black bear,
Common leopard, Langursare, Brown bear, etc. are some of the prevalent animal species. Different
colourful butterfly species can also be found in the sanctuary.
Avian fauna
Nanda Devi National Park is the bird watchers’ paradise. The chief bird species that can be sighted
here are blue-fronted redstart, gresbreaks, orange-flanked bush robin, rose finches, Indian tree pipit,
etc.
How to get there
The nearest railhead is at Rishikesh, about 276 km away. The closest airport is at Jolly Grant in
Dehradun (around 295 km away). Nearest bus terminal is at Joshimath. From Joshimath one has to
trek to reach the park.
General information
Quality hotels, lodges and resorts are available at Badrinath and Joshimath. Trekking is the most
popular tourist activity in the region. The trekking route extends from the Lata village to Dharasi,
which is the topmost point of the range. Visitors below the age of 14 are not allowed inside the park.
Maximum of two groups in a day and four groups in a week are allowed inside the park. Each group
comprises of five people only.
