NARCONDAM ISLAND WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Narcondam Island Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Narcondam Island of the Andaman and Nicobar
Islands. It was established in the year 1977.
Flora
Vegetation type: semi-evergreen /moist deciduous, littoral and moist evergreen forest. Major species: Fig, cottonwood, Portia Tree, Bengal almond, silk cotton tree, Burmese fishtail palm, etc.
Fauna
Mammals and reptiles: Andaman Water Monitor, Narcondam Small Flying Fox, Nicobar Flying Fox, Andaman Day Gecko, Andaman Dwarf Gecko, Sea Snake, etc.
Aquatic species: gray reef sharks, bump head parrotfish, mantas, Napoleon wrasse, corals, etc.
Avian Fauna
Flagship species: Narcondam Hornbills
Other species: Pied Imperial Pigeons, Common Kingfisher, Siberian Thrush, Long tailed Parakeet, Slaty- legged Crake, Black-naped Tern, etc.
Getting there
The closest airport to Narcondam Island Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Port Blair. There are no roadways or railway stations connecting the sanctuary. From Port Blair the visitors have to avail boat facilities that are provided by officials of the Island for reaching the sanctuary.
Tourist Information
The wildlife sanctuary is open to the visitors throughout the year. Scuba diving, water sports, nature photography and bird viewing are major tourist activities here. Waters encircling the Narcondam Island are a major dive site and diving destination. Steep slopes and rocky ridges such as Ooh La La, Chimneys, Light House Reef, etc. are prime dive sites. The water surrounding the island is quite transparent and one can easily see the barrel sponges, different amazing underwater rock and coral formations.
Strong ocean currents exist around Narcondam Island. Hence the tourists participating in the scuba diving and other water sports need to be always vigilant and carefully follow the instructions of the guide. Avoid visiting the wildlife reserve during the monsoon season. The tourists have to contact the authorities of the Island regarding accommodation, scuba diving facilities, live aboard packages and for other queries and arrangements.
