NATIONAL CHAMBAL GHARIAL WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
National Chambal Sanctuary, also called as National Chambal Gharial Wildlife Sanctuary, is nestled
along the Indus-Ganges Monsoon Forest belt. It is situated on the Chambal River close to the tri-
point of the Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh states. The Madhya Pradesh portion of
the sanctuary was declared a wildlife sanctuary on 20 December 1978; the Rajasthan’s portion was
established as a wildlife sanctuary on 7 December 1979 and the Uttar Pradesh’s portion was
gazetted on 29 January 1979.
The National Chambal Gharial Wildlife Sanctuary is a proposed Ramsar site and has been declared as
an IBA (important bird area) IN122. This wildlife sanctuary is under the administration of the
Department of Forest under the Project Officer, with headquarters at Morena in Madhya Pradesh.
Flora
Ber, Khair, Churel, Palash and Grassy patches.
Fauna
Flagship species: 18 ft. Gharial, 21 ft. Crocodile, fresh water dolphins and red-crowned roof turtles.
Other species: Otter, Panther, Chinkara, Sambhar, Jackal, Hyena.
Avian Fauna
Vulnerable species: Indian skimmer, Indian Courser, Pallas’s Fish Eagle and Sarus Crane.
Migratory bird species: Red-crested Pochard, Black-bellied Terns, Bar-headed Goose, Ferruginous
Pochard, etc.
Other species: Pallid Harrier, Greater Flamingos, Lesser Flamingos, Brown Hawk Owl, Darters, etc.
Getting There
The nearest bus, rail and air terminals are located at Kota. The sanctuary is about 125 km from the
Keoladeo Ghana (Bharatpur) Bird Sanctuary on the Agra-Fatehabad Road. It can also be approached
by roadways from Agra, which is approx. 86 km away. Most ornithologists access National Chambal
Sanctuary from close to Agra in Uttar Pradesh, where different walks and boat cruises along the
river and ravines are organized by the Chambal Safari.
Tourist Information
Forest Rest House and RTDC Hotel at Kota are available for accommodation for the tourists. One can
also opt to stay in the Birder's Inn, which is located on Bird Sanctuary Road at Bharatpur in
Rajasthan. Chambal Safari Lodge at Jarar in Uttar Pradesh is another option for staying. The
Nandgaon Ghat, in Agra District, is an access point into the wildlife sanctuary. Public vehicle entry
points are situated at Nandgaon Ghat, Pinahat, Bharch and Sehson. The best way to sight and
photograph the river dolphins and the gharial is by hiring boats and guides, which are available at
different points along the river. Walking trails along the river and ravines is other popular tourist
activity.
