NATIONAL CHAMBAL SANCTUARY
National Chambal Sanctuary is situated along the Chambal River (approximately 425 km long)
and is spread over Etawah and Agra district in Madhya Pradesh. It is a Tristate sanctuary and
parts of it are spread over Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. This protected area is home to
numerous rare and threatened wildlife species and is a proposed Ramsar spot. It is also
recognized as an Important Bird Area (IBA) IN122.

Fauna
Flagship Species: gharial, Ganges river dolphin and red-crowned roof turtle.
Other Species: Muggar crocodile, Rhesus Macaque, Indian Flying Fox, Porcupine, Indian tent
turtle, Monitor lizard, Blackbuck, Indian Wolf, etc.
Avian Fauna
Flagship Species: Indian Skimmer
Other species: Sarus Crane, Indian Courser, Darters, Red-crested Pochard, Bar-headed Goose,
Flamingos, Pallas's Fish Eagle, Flamingos and others.
Getting There
The nearest airport, bus and rail terminals are located at Agra. Another major closest rail
junction to National Chambal sanctuary is at Mathura.
Tourist Information
Visitors can find accommodation at the Public Works Department Inspection Bungalows and at
Forest Rest Houses situated at Pinahat and Bah. Alternatively one can stay in the Eco Lodges
and hotels at Agra, Bah and Etawah.
Entry points to the sanctuary for the public vehicle are located at Pinahat, Sehson, Nandagon
Ghat and Bharch.
The best way to view the flora and wildlife of the Chambal Sanctuary is by means of motorized
boats. Boats and experienced guides can be hired at different points along the Chambal River
with the assistance of the office of the Conservator of Forests located at Kota. Walking trails
along the rivers and in the ravines is another popular pastime of the tourists.
