NEORA VALLEY NATIONAL PARK - West Bengal

Established in 1986, Neora Valley National Park is one of the richest biological reserves in North- east region of India. It is located in the Kalimpong subdivision under Darjeeling District of West Bengal and is spread over an area of about 88 sq km.

Fauna
Red Panda is the most famous animal of this national park. The other animals of the park include Himalayan flying squirrel, barking deer, Himalayan thar, Himalayan black bear, wild boar, clouded leopard, Himalayan black bear, etc. Recently Royal Bengal Tiger has also been spotted in certain areas of the park.

Avian-fauna
The bird species that can be prominently found here are Rufous-throated Partridge, Satyr Tragopan, Golden-throated Barbet, Mountain Imperial Pigeon, Cuckoos, Darjeeling Pygmy Wren-Babbler, Mountain Imperial Pigeon, Orioles, Bay Woodpecker and so on.

Flora
The important flora species of the region include Oak, Bamboo, Sal, Rhododendrons, Ferns, etc. Neora Valley National Park is quite famous among the tourists for its numerous colourful orchids.

How to get there
Samsing (approximately 80km from Siliguri) and Lava (approximately 30km from Kalimpong) are two entry points of the park. The closest airport is at Bagdogra (about100 km away) and the nearby railhead is at Darjeeling (30km). The closest bus terminal is located at Siliguri. Regular buses ply from Siliguri to Samsing and Lava.

Tourist information
Accommodations are available at Forest bungalows located at Samsing and Lava. Certain forest resorts at Suntaley Khola offer tented accommodations.
Entry permit is required for entering the park. Jaributi is the best place in the park to view wildlife. While viewing the animals, remain silent and do not tease them in any way. The visitors are advised to wear Khaki clothes with olive green or dark green shades. Refrain from wearing bright coloured attires as that may excite the animals. Littering is prohibited inside the park.
