Located in the West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya, Nokrek National Park is believed to be the last
remaining haven for the red pandas.
About the park
It is about 1418 metres above sea level and is situated approximately 2 km away from the Tura Peak.
Its total area coverage is about 47 sq km. The park was included in the UNESCO’s Biosphere Reserve
list in the year 2009. The park is named after one of the famous peaks of the region - Nokrek Hill
Peak.
Fauna
Red Panda and Asian elephants are famous animals of the park. Stump tailed macaque, hillock
gibbon, tiger, giant flying squirrel, pig tailed macaque, Himalayan black bear, leopard, python,
binturong, pangolin, serow, golden cat, wild buffalo, etc. are some of the endemic and endangered
species of the region. The national park is also home to different rare and colourful bird species.
Flora
Wild lemon, white meranti, grand rasamala, orchids, chempaka, lali, etc. are some important flora
species of Nokrek National Park. Rare species of citrus indica and a rare species of orange (known as
Memang Narang) is also found here.
How to get there
Tura is the nearby town to the park. The nearest airport and railway station are at Guwahati, which
is about 128 km away. The tourists can also avail bus or car services from Shillong and Guwahati to
reach the park.
Tourist information
There are no accommodation facilities within the park. However, one can find some hotels and
tourist lodges at Tura. Traditional accommodation can be availed at the Daribokgre Village. Provision
for nature walks, trekking, bird watching, rock climbing and tree house accommodation are offered
here in this village.
Nokrek to Tura Top is a famous trekking route of the park that will enable the tourists to have a
closer look at the wildlife and biodiversity of the region. Old Stone Age site and the Siju Cave are
two famous tourist spots located within the park.
