NONGKHYLLEM SANCTUARY
Located close to the Lailad village, Nongkhyllem Sanctuary is a prominent holiday destination in
the state of Meghalaya. It was established in the year 1981.
Flora
The sanctuary comprises rich botanical surroundings with a range of flora that are originally not
found anywhere in India. They were actually brought from different foreign lands to bestow a
unique natural look to the sanctuary.
Fauna
Royal Bengal Tiger, Himalayan Black Bear, Indian Bison, Clouded Leopard, rodents, reptiles and
many more.
Avian Fauna
Manipur Bush Quail, Brown Hornbill, Rufous Necked Hornbill, etc.
Getting There
The sanctuary can be easily reached through Guwahati-Shillong NH via Umling-Patharkhmah Road
which is in the vicinity of Nongkhyllem Sanctuary. The nearest aerodrome is at Umroi. Most trains
that travel from Jorabad to Shillong pass across the Patharkhmah Road to Lailad village.
Tourist Information
Accommodation for the visitors are available at the two forest bungalows. The entrance to the
sanctuary is located 14 km off the bad roads after a turnoff from the Guwahati-Shillong highway.
Drive-in tourists need to secure entry permit from the forest range officer, stationed at Nongpoh.
No eating facility is available inside the sanctuary. Visitors who have the entry permit can carry
their own provisions for cooking in the kitchen of the beat officers. Littering is strictly prohibited
inside the park.
The sanctuary has hilly undulating topography, hence, wear comfortable clothes and strong shoes
with proper grips for commuting safely.
