PAINGANGA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Painganga Wildlife Sanctuary in Maharashtra is named after the Painganga River that bounds the
sanctuary on three sides. The sanctuary is separated in the central region by a wide valley that forms the
borders Yavatmal and Nanded districts. It was established in the year 1986.
Flora
Arid teak forests and mixed southern deciduous forests.
Fauna
Fox, Hare, Four Horned Antelope, Leopard, Sambar, Jackal, Porcupine, Black Buck, Nilgai, Chinkara,
monkey, langur and others.
Avian Fauna
Jungle owl, dove, bee-earth, hopper, pigeon, roller, bulbul, vulture, kite, cuckoos, eagle, kingfisher and
heron.
Getting there
Yavatmal airport, about 9km away, is the closest airport to Painganga Wildlife Sanctuary. Shakuntala
railway station at Yavatmal and Wani junction are popular railway junctions to the sanctuary. The
sanctuary is connected with different parts of the state via National Highway No. 7, Nagpur-Tulzapur
state highway and Amravati-Chandrapur state highway.
Tourist Information
Several accommodation facilities are available in and around the sanctuary. Jungle safari, trekking and
nature trails are major pastime activities here. The visitors are always advised to wear comfortable
clothes with khaki or olive green shades that easily camouflage with the forest environment. Always
follow the designated forest track and avoid unknown areas of the sanctuary. Do respect the tranquility
of the sanctuary and do not disturb the serenity with any sort of loud noise.
