PAINTING AS A HOBBY (Class 9)
Painting as a hobby is quite beneficial for children. It sharpens their ability and
teaches them the art of observation. Before one gets into this amazing hobby
there are certain fundamentals of painting that need to be known first.
Important aspects
• Rhythm
• Colour and tone
• Intensity
When one takes up painting as a hobby, one should always give due
consideration to the above aspects of painting. These give a vivid and
professional look to the paintings.
Types of painting: Since its inception as the crude cave paintings, this art has
greatly evolved over time. Today there are different styles of painting. However,
the styles of paint that are most popular among the painting enthusiasts are:
Oil painting: In this technique, painting is done with colour pigments that are
bound together with an oil medium. It is one of the most popular methods of
painting. With oil painting it is easy to develop different shades of paints.
Dynamic pictures with distinctive depth can be created with this painting style.
Watercolour painting: This style involves painting with water based, thin
paint. This painting dries very quickly and so blending is quite difficult. It is for
this reason watercolour painting is regarded as one of the most difficult painting
styles. However, these paintings usually have simple and clean finish.
Acrylic painting: It is a quick-drying paint made of pigments that are bound
together with an acrylic polymer. It is in-between the watercolor and oil paint.
When acrylic paint is diluted with water or other mediums, the acrylic painting
can be conferred its own unique look or it can be bestowed with the
characteristics of either watercolor or oil painting.
Painting as a hobby can be a rewarding experience for children of all ages.
Besides development of character, this hobby helps one to earn pocket money
too by selling the artworks in the local art galleries or art shows.
