PAKHUI TIGER RESERVE - Arunachal Pradesh

Pakhui Tiger Reserve (PTR) is situated in the base of the Eastern Himalayas in the district of East Kameng in Arunachal Pradesh. It is spread over an area of about 861 sq km and is located at an elevation of almost 100 to 2000 metres above sea level.

About the park
The park was first established in the year 1966 as Pakke Reserve Forest. Then in the year 1977, it was converted into a Game Sanctuary. In 2001 it was upgraded to Wildlife sanctuary. Finally, on April 23, 2002, it was declared a Tiger Reserve under Project Tiger scheme.

Fauna
Tiger, Clouded Leopard, Leopard, Himalayan Black Bear, Samber, Barking Deer, Civets, Elephant, Mongoose, etc.

Avian fauna
Asian Emerald Cuckoo, Forest Eagle Owl, Jerdon's baza, Silver-eared Leiothrix, Ruby-cheeked Sunbird, Sultan Tit, Ibisbill and many more.

Flora
The entire vegetation cover of Pakhui Tiger Reserve is primarily of Assam Valley tropical semi- evergreen forest. Khokan, Hollock, Simul, Barpat, Uriam, etc. are important tree species of the region.

Getting there
The closest aerodromes are at Guwahati (about 280km away) and Tezpur (almost 50km away). Soibari (approximately 36km away) and Biswanath Charali (approximately 47km away) are the nearest railhead. The nearest major bus terminals are located at Guwahati, Tezpur, Bomdila and Balipara.

Useful Tips
Good quality tourist lodges and hotels are available in Bhalukpong. The tourists can also find lodging at Langka forest rest houses, Khari and Seijosa (West Bank), situated on the eastern side of the reserve. Tipi forest rest house, almost 4 km away from Bhalukpong, also provide comfortable accommodation to visitors. Forest entry permit is required from the Divisional Forest Officer. Seijosa (east), Bhalukpong (west) and Pakke Kessang (north) are the prime gateways to the park. One is advised not to use perfumes. It is always advisable to wear olive green, inconspicuous khaki, or grey coloured clothes. Entry into the park before sunrise and after sunset is strictly prohibited.
