PENCH NATIONAL PARK – Madhya Pradesh

Pench National Park is located in Madhya Pradesh in the Chhindwara and Seoni districts. It is nestled in the lower altitude of the Satpura hills at an elevation of about 425 to 620 metres above sea level.

About the park
The park was established as a sanctuary in 1977. It was upgraded to a national park in the year 1983. In 1992 it was deemed a Tiger Reserve. The park is named after the Pench River that flows almost through the middle of the park. ‘The Jungle Book’, the famous book of Rudyard Kipling, and its famous character ‘Mowgli’ is inspired from this park. Hence, this park is also popularly referred to as Mowgli Land.

Flora
The park is home to some of the endangered and ethno-botanical importance flora species such as teak, haldu, bamboo, white kulu, amaltas, bija, aonla, lendia, etc.

Fauna
Tiger, gaur, wild dog, barking deer, leopard, sambhar, striped hyena, chital, wild boar, sloth bear, chowsingha, porcupine, etc. are the endemic animal species of the reserve.

Avian-fauna
The prominent birds of the park include blue kingfishers, magpie robin, crimson-breasted barbet, pintail, bulbul, racket-tailed drongo, mynas, herons and so on.

Tourist information
Karmajhiri and Turiya are the two entry gates of the park. Pench Jungle Camp offers unique accommodation facilities to the visitors within the park. Several other lodging options are available at Bori, Khawāsa, Khāpri and at Nagpur.
Open Gypsy safari, Nature trails and Elephant Ride are the best ways to explore the wildlife of Pench National Park. The visitors are not allowed to carry mobile phones, radios, combustible materials, firearms, cigarettes and match boxes inside the park.

Getting there
The closest airport and railhead is at Nagpur, about 102 km away. The nearby bus terminal is located at Seoni. The park can also be approached via National Highway No 7 from Jabalpur and Nagpur.
