PEPPARA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Peppara wildlife sanctuary is nestled along the Western Ghats in the Thiruvananthapuram district in South Kerala. It was established in the year 1938. River Karamana and its tributaries are the main drainage of the Peppara sanctuary.

Flora
Vegetation type: Southern moist mixed deciduous forest, Southern hilltop tropical evergreen, West coast tropical evergreen, West coast semi-evergreen, sub-montane hill valley swamp forest, myristica swamp forest, etc.

Important species: Kindal, silk cotton tree, white siris, Ceylon ironwood, nandi tree, blackboard tree, etc.

Fauna
Tiger, sloth bear, leopard, sambar barking deer, Asian elephant, Nilgiri tahr, Nilgiri langur, bonnet macaque, etc.

Avian Fauna
White-bellied Treepie, Malabar Grey Hornbill, Small Sunbird, etc.

How to get there
The sanctuary is located about 50 km northeast of Thiruvananthapuram, on the Thiruvanthapuram- Ponmudi Road. Closest railway terminal to Peppara wildlife sanctuary is located about 50 km away at Thiruvananthapuram. The nearest airport is about 56 km, Trivandrum International Airport. Different bus services are available from Aryanad and Vithura.

Tourist Information
There are no staying options within the sanctuary. However accommodation can be availed at Inspection Bungalow of the Kerala Water Authority, which is located quite close to the headquarters. Trekking expeditions are organised for the tourists to certain forest spots such as Vazahuvanthole waterfalls, Bonafalls, Kalarkad waterfalls, etc. The important peaks in the sanctuary are Chemmunjimottai (1717m), Arumukhamkunnu (1457m), Athirumalai (1594m), Nachiyadikunnu (957m) and Koviltherimalai (1313m).

The incoming tourists can also opt to visit the nearby tribal settlements to witness their lifestyle and culture quite closely. Nature trail, photography and bird viewing are other popular pastimes of the tourists. The visitors are expected to respect the privacy of the wildlife and adhere to the rules and regulations of the sanctuary.
