PHAWNGPUI NATIONAL PARK – Mizoram

Phawngpui National Park is situated in the Chhimtuipui District of Mizoram. It is spread over a sprawling area of about 50 sq km.

About the park
The park was established in 1992. It is located in the north-east of Mizoram along the Myanmar border. It is nestled among the enchanting Phawngpui mountain peak at an elevation of about 7,103 ft above sea level. The locals revere the Phawngpui mountain peak and believe it as an abode of the Gods. They refer to the mountain as the Blue Mountain. Hence, park is also popularly addressed as Blue Mountain National Park.

Flora
Rhododendrons, orchids, Montane Sub-tropical woodlands, bamboos, oak, etc. are exotic flora species of the region.

Avian fauna
The prominent birds of the region include dark rumped swift, blyth’s tragopan, hume’s pheasant, kaleej pheasant, peregrine falcon, sunbirds, etc.

Fauna
Blue Mountain National Park harbours several rare and endangered animals which include Tiger, Leopard, Hollock Gibbon, Goral, Barking Deer, Serrow, Common Langur, Rhesus Macaque Rhesus Macaque, Asiatic Black Bear, Capped Langur, Slow Loris, etc.

Tourist Information
Certain lodges, relaxation houses, guest houses, etc. are available in Aizawl and in the villages situated in the vicinity of Phawngpui National Park. Camping, sight-seeing and trekking are popular tourist activities in the area. The park is also open for picnic.
After sunset the temperature here falls a bit. Hence, visitors are advised to carry light woollens to keep themselves warm. Littering, breaking of plants and flowers, blowing horns, teasing and feeding the wild animals, carrying inflammable items within the park are strictly prohibited by the park authorities. Avoid taking short cuts and follow the designated path assigned for the tourists.

Getting there
Nearest airport is at Silchar in Assam, about 184 km away. The closest airport and bus terminal is at Aizawl in Mizoram. Aizawl is well connected by road with other parts of the country via NH–54.
