Pin Valley National Park is situated in the Lahul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh. It is nestled in
the cold desert region at an elevation of about 11,500 to 20,000 ft above sea level. It was established
in 1987. It is named after the famous Pin River that flows near the park area.
Flora
The rare flora species of Birch and Juniper are found in abundant here. Himalayan cedar, alpine trees
and several medicinal plants are the other important flora species.
Fauna
The park is quite famous for its snow leopard, chhumurti horses and Siberian ibex population. The
other animal species of the region include marten, red fox, bharal, weasel and so on.
Avian fauna
Himalayan snowcock, snowfinch, chukar, golden eagle, Himalayan raven, Himalayan chough,
bearded vulture, pika, etc. are endemic bird population here.
Tourist tips
No traditional accommodation facilities are available within the park. Camping facilities are available
at Mud Farka. Proper lodging facilities are available at Kaza.
Foreign tourists are not allowed inside the park. Permit is required for the Indian tourists to enter
the park. Pin Valley National Park witnesses heavy snowfall during December-March. Hence,
tourists are advised not to plan trips during this period. The climate in the park is generally very cold.
Hence, visitors should fully equip themselves with warm clothings, binoculars, medicine, sleeping
bags and enough food materials.
How to get there
The best way to approach the Pin valley is by road. The valley can be accessed from Shimla via
Reckong Peo and Sumdo in Kinnaur or Manali via Kaza. One can hire a taxi or bus from Kaza to
Mikkim. From Mikkim visitors have to proceed on foot to reach the park. The nearest airport is at
Bhuntar (Kullu) and the closest railhead is at Shimla.
