PRANAHITA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Pranahita Wildlife Sanctuary is nestled in the famous Deccan plateau. It is situated in the
Adilabad district of Andhra Pradesh along the coast of river Pranahita, an important tributary of
the river Godavari. The total coverage of the sanctuary is approximately 136 sq km.
History
The sanctuary was established in the year 1980 and happens to be one of the oldest wildlife
sanctuaries of the country. It was established primarily for the conservation of black bucks, which is
the state animal.
Flora
Riverine Forests and dry deciduous forest are the endemic vegetation covers of Pranahita Wildlife
Sanctuary. The important trees here are Bamboo, teak, Anogeisus, Terminalias and so on.
Fauna
Black Buck is the important animal of the forest. Other mammals of the sanctuary include Panther,
Tiger, Indian otter, Cheetal, Nilgai, Sloth Bear, Langurs, Civets, etc. During the wet seasons, the
tigers and certain other animals of the sanctuary migrate to Tadoba sanctuary in Maharastra.

Teals, Brahminy Ducks, herons, strokes etc.
Getting there
The closest airport and bus terminal are located about 300 km away at Hyderabad. The nearest
railway station is at Mancherial about 70 km.
Tourist information
No accommodation is available inside the sanctuary. Forest Rest Houses at Chinnur or Mancherial
provide quality lodging facilities for the tourists.
Permit for entering the sanctuary has to be obtained from the Divisional Forest Officer, stationed at
Jannaram. The temperature of the area varies between 15 0 C and 40 0 C. Tourists are advised to wear
light cotton clothes as the humidity level is very high here. The area is mostly a rugged topography.
Hence, visitors are advised to wear proper boots during the excursions and nature trails.
