RAJAJI NATIONAL PARK – Uttarakhand

Rajaji National Park is situated in the Saharanpur, Pauri Garwal and Dehradun districts of Uttarakhand. It is nestled along the lower elevations of Shiwalik ranges of the Himalayan mountain ranges and covers an area of about 820.42 sq km.

About the park
The park is named after the first governor general of India, Late Sri C. Rajgopalachari, who was also popularly referred to as Rajaji. It was established in 1983 and comprises of three Wildlife Sanctuaries - Rajaji Wildlife Sanctuary, Chilla Wildlife Sanctuary and Motichur Wildlife Sanctuary.

Flora
The important floras are acacia, bridelia, dalbergia, shorea and phoebe. Tropical and semi-tropical moist deciduous forests are the prominent vegetation cover here.

Fauna
Asian elephant, tigers, goral, leopard, Himalayan black bear, Indian Porcupine, King cobra, python, etc. are important fauna found here.

Avian fauna
The prominent birds of Rajaji National Park are kingfishers, woodpeckers, Great Pied Hornbill, Fire tailed sunbird, Black-necked Stork, etc.

Travel tips
Very few accommodation options are available within the park areas. More lodging options are available at Rishikesh, Haridwar, Dehradun, Kotdwar, etc.
Park entry permits can be obtained at the park gates itself. It is always advisable to wear dull shaded attires such as olive green, grey or khaki. Avoid wearing bright coloured clothes.
Entry is strictly restricted before sunrise and after sunset. No night driving is allowed in the park.

Getting there
The closest railhead is at Rishikesh (approximately 18km away) and the nearest airport is Jolly Grant in Dehradun (about 35km away). The closest bus terminal is at Chilla (about 8km) and Haridwar (about 24km). From Delhi one can travel via Meerut, Khatauli, Muzaffar Nagar, Roorkee, Haridwar to Chilla. The park is a fire hazard region. Hence, tourists are advised not to throw lighted cigarettes, matches or other objects inside the park.
