RAJIV GANDHI NATIONAL PARK – Karnataka

Rajiv Gandhi National Park is situated in the Mysore and Kodagu district of Karnataka. The total area coverage of the park is approximately 643.39 km.

About the park
The park used to be a famous hunting ground of kings belonging to Wodeyar dynasty. However, in the year 1988, it was notified as a national park. In 1999 it was declared a tiger reserve under the Project Tiger plan. River Nagarahole flows through the centre of the park. Hence, it is also popularly referred to as Nagarahole National Park.

Wild life
The prominent fauna species of the region include tiger, dhole, leopard, four-horned antelope, gaur, elephant, wild boar, monitor lizard, marsh crocodile, rock python, oriental white ibis, red headed vulture, white cheeked barbet, Indian scimitar babbler, yellow legged green pigeon, sirkeer malkhoa and so on.

Flora
The endemic tree species of the reserve are golden shower tree, teak, rosewood, Indian kino, flame of the forest, axlewood, clumping bamboo, cotton tree, silver oak, Kadam etc.

Tourist information
Veeranahosahalli is the important entrance to park. Nagarhole Forest Department office and Murkal are the other entrance points to Rajiv Gandhi National Park.
The visitors can stay at the Nagarhole Forest Guest house with prior booking with the Wildlife department in Mysore (Contact no. +91-821-2480902). Other nearby accommodation is available at Murkal, Veeranahosahalli and Kutta.
No jeeps are given on hire by the Forest Department. Hence, visitors have to arrange for their own jeep for safari rides. All the jeep safaris should be escorted by a Forest Department guide. Trekking is another popular tourist activity inside the reserve. However, camping is not allowed inside the park.

Getting there
The nearest railway station is in Mysore and the closest airport is located in Bangalore. The nearby bus terminal is at Hunsur. The road from Hunsur to the park can be accessed only between 6am and 6pm
