RANGANATHITTU BIRD SANCTUARY

Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is situated in Ranganthittu in the state of Karnataka. Ranganthittu is basically a small group of islands, situated in the river Cauvery. It was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1940 by the then Maharaja of Mysore, at the behest of Dr Salim Ali, the famous ornithologist of India.

Flora
Vegetation type: broadleaf deciduous forests, bamboo groves and eucalyptus.
Major species: arjun tree, screw pine, Iphigenia mysorensis lily.

Fauna
Bonnet macaque, fruit bat, palm civet, common otter, marsh crocodile and common mongoose

Avian Fauna
White ibis, open billed storks, spoon billed storks, painted storks, sandpiper, white necked storks, darters, cormorants, etc.

Getting There
Closest railhead is at Srirangapatna (about 3 km) and the nearest airport is in Mysore (19 km). Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is located close to Bangalore - Mysore highway and is linked with major towns and cities of Karnataka with good roadways. Regular services of Mysore City Buses and Private Buses are available from Mysore to Srirangapatna.

Tourist Information
There are no staying options within the bird sanctaury. The tourists can find different budget accommodation options at Srirangapatna and Mysore. Bird watching, ranger-guided boat rides, nature trail and photography are popular tourist past times in the sanctuary. The entrance of Ranganathittu Sanctuary has a winding path which is bounded by huge bamboos. On both sides of this path they are pictures and information about the numerous bird species that are found inside the sanctuary. A canteen for the visitors is located near the lake. The riverine reed beds are the best places to spot the mugger crocodiles. The best time to explore the sanctuary is during the early morning hours when the forest is less crowded with visitors.
