RENUKA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Renuka Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Himachal Pradesh, near Nahan. It encompasses the Renuka
Reserve Forest area. The sanctuary is declared as Abhayaranya. A buffer belt of about 300 hectare
encircles the sanctuary.
Flora
Forest type: arid Sal forest and mixed dry deciduous forest.
Flora species: Shisham, Khair, Lucinea, Anogeissus, Terminalia, Cordia, Carrie, etc.
Fauna
Flagship species: Asiatic lion
Other species: Leopard, spotted deer, Himalayan black bear, barking deer, nilgai, lion-tailed
macaques, Porcupine, Palm Civet and others.
Avian Fauna
Black pheasant, red jungle fowl, green pigeons, peacock, common coots, bulbul, etc.
Getting there
The closest bus terminal is at Nahan. There are regular bus services from Nahan to Dadahu. From
Dadahu, the remaining journey to Renuka Wildlife Sanctuary has to be covered on foot, which is
nearly forty minutes walk.
The closest airport is at Chandigarh. The nearest railway terminuses are at Ambala, Kalka and
Chandigarh. One can easily get transport from these places to Nahan. The sanctuary can also be
approached from Dehradun, (65km away from Nahan), Manali, Hardwar and Delhi.
Tourist Information
Tourists can stay at the rest houses located at Renuka and Dadahu. Lion safari, bird spotting and
trekking are major tourist pastimes here. Armoured vans for lion safaris are provided by the
Department of Forest. Renuka Mini Zoo and an aviary are the other important attractions of Renuka
Sanctuary. Renuka Lake and Renuka Temple are famous tourist spots located in the vicinity of the
forest.
