Sahyadri Tiger Reserve is situated in the vicinity of Sangli in the state of Maharashtra. It
encompasses the Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary (423.55 sq km) and Chandoli National Park (317.67
sq km). The reserve is named after the Sahyadri mountain range, which is a part of the Western
Ghats.
Flora
Vegetation cover: semi-evergreen, moist evergreen, moist and arid deciduous forests.
Trees: Anjani Ironwood, Fig, Jamun, Crape Myrtle, Indian Laurel, Indian Gooseberry, Kokum,
Bluestem Grass Sp. , Black Spear Grass, Golden Beard Grass, Kangaroo Grass, etc.
Fauna
Bengal Tigers, Leopard Cats, Indian Bison, Indian Leopards, Barking Deer, Blackbuck, Mouse
Deer, etc.
As per the 2007 census, there were about 9 tigers in the reserve. According to the estimation
reports of the Wildlife Institute of India, there are around 24 tigers in Sahyadri Tiger Reserve
and its adjoining landscape.
Avian Fauna
Serpent Eagle Hornbill, Paradise Flycatcher, Thrush, Babblers, etc.
Getting there
Nearest railway station and bus terminal are at Karad (47 km), Miraj (85 km), Sangli (75 km)
and Kolhapur (80 km). From these spots one can hire taxis or other private vehicles to reach the
reserve. National Highway No. 4 passes through Kolhapur and Karad. Nearest airports are at
Kolhapur, Mumbai (about 380 km) and Pune (about 210 km).
Tourist information
Irrigation Department provides comfortable accommodation facilities within the reserve with
prior reservation through the Executive Engineer’s Office located at Mandur, Kolhapur. The
nearby towns and cities also offer quality lodgings for the incoming visitors.
