SALIM ALI NATIONAL PARK - Jammu and Kashmir

Salim Ali National Park is located in Srinagar, the capital city of the Jammu and Kashmir state. It is spread over an area of about 9 sq km.

About the park
It was notified a national park in the year 1992. It is named after Salim Moizuddin Abdul Ali, who was a revered naturalist and ornithologist of the country. The park is also referred to as City Forest National Park. The park was transformed into the Royal Spring Gold Course by the then Chief Minister of the state between 1998 and 2001.

Flora
Mangrove Shrubbery is the prominent flora of the City Forest National Park.

Fauna
The park is home to Kashmiri Stags. The other rare and endangered fauna species of the region include SnowCock, Serow, Monal, Chakar, etc.

Avian Fauna
Salim Ali National Park is bird watchers’ delight. Several colourful and rare birds that can be sighted here are Kingfisher, Coots, Pintails and so on.

Tourist information
Quality hotels, resorts, guest houses, etc. can be found in Sonamarg, Srinagar and Jammu. The prime tourist activities here are bird watching, nature trails and trekking. Tourists are advised to carry binoculars for viewing the birds closely from the watch towers.
One has to always maintain silence while bird sighting or else the birds fly off. Avoid taking your own short cuts but follow the instructions of the guide. Carry warm clothes as the temperature tends to fall after the sunset.

How to reach there
The nearest railhead is the Jammu Tawi. The closest airport and bus terminal is in Srinagar (about 80 km away). The visitors can hire buses or cars from these places to reach Sonamarg which is located in the vicinity of the park. Deluxe buses are also available from Srinagar and Jammu to Sonamarg.
