SANDI BIRD SANCTUARY
Sandi Bird Sanctuary is situated at a distance of around 19km on Hardoi-Sandi road in the state of Uttar
Pradesh. It is also referred to as Dahar Jheel and is bound by River Garra.
Notification: Wildlife Sanctuary in 1990.
Flora
Hari kai, Jalkumbhi, Katia, Jalrani, Anjuar, Bhoori Kai, Kamal, Patera, etc.
Fauna
Blue Bull, Mongoose, Nilgai, etc.
Avian Fauna
Resident species: White Breasted King Fisher, Black Ibis, Purple and Grey Herons, Indian Skimmer, etc.
Migratory species: Pintail, Ruddy shelduck, Greylag goose, Red crested pochards, Great crested Grebe,
etc.
Many ornithologists believe that this bird reserve was also frequented by the rare Siberian White Crane
in the past. The migratory birds, before entering the Sandi sanctuary, rest on the banks of the Garra
River. Due to its rich avian fauna population, the Bombay Natural History Society has listed the
sanctuary as an "Important Bird Area".
Getting there
Sandi Bird Sanctuary is about 390km away from Delhi and 110km from Lucknow. The nearest airport is
at Amausi at Lucknow. The closest bus terminal is at Sandi. The nearest railway station is at Hardoi
(about 19km). Sandi Sanctuary is nestled on the main road, close to the Sandi Police Station.
Tourist Information
Budget and deluxe hotels, resorts and guest houses are available in the towns and villages in the vicinity
of the sanctuary.
A shallow lake situated within the sanctuary is an ideal place to spot different colourful birds during the
winter season. Christian Fellowship Church, Someshwara Temple, Ramakrishna Ashram, Sandila,
Shahabad, etc are some of the places of interest in the proximity of the sanctuary. Interpretation Centre
of this bird reserve is also worth visiting.
