SANJAY GANDHI NATIONAL PARK – Maharashtra

Sanjay Gandhi National Park is situated at the suburb of Borivali in Mumbai in the state of Maharashtra. The park is also popularly referred to as Borivali National Park.

About the park
The park was established in the year 1974 and covers an area of about 104 sq km. It is named after Sanjay Gandhi who was the son of Indira Gandhi, the ex Prime Minister of India.

Flora
Teak, flame of the forest, kadamba, red silk cotton, shisam, etc. are the important flora species found here.

Avian Fauna
Magpies, jungle owlets, swifts, kingfishers, golden orioles, paradise flycatcher, herons, peacock, bulbuls, etc. are the endemic bird species.

Fauna
Borivali National Park is quite famous for its lion, tiger and white Indian tiger populations. The other animals of the park are leopard, bonnet macaque, chital, Asian palm civet, grey langur hanuman, sambar deer, barking deer, etc.

Getting there
The closest airport is the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Santa Cruz, Mumbai (about 18 km from park). The nearest bus terminal and railway station is at Borivali. There are regular local train services between Borivali and Churchgate railway station. Borivali lies on the Mumabi - Ahmadabad national highway.

Tourist information
There are two camp sheds and four rest houses within the park providing lodging facilities to the visitors with prior booking.
Krishnagiri Upavan, covering an area of about 5.5 sq km, is the public recreation zone inside the park. The lion safari and the tiger safari zones are the main attraction of the park. A narrow gauge train (named Van Rani meaning Queen of the Forest) runs in and around the park’s tourists spot.
The Kanheri Caves and a Jain temple, called Trimurti are other popular places to visit inside the park. Trekking, nature walking trails, boating and rock climbing are popular tourist activities of the park.
