Sanjay National Park is situated in the Majhauli and Kusumi blocks of Sidhi district of Madhya
Pradesh. The total area of the park is about 466.7 sq km.
About the park
The park was set-up in 1975 under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. The park along with the Dubri
Wildlife Sanctuary forms the Sanjay-Dubri Tiger Reserve which is about 831 sq km. After the
bifurcation of the Madhya Pradesh in the year 2000, significant part of the park went to the
Chhattisgarh State. The park so formed in Chhattisgarh is known as Guru Ghasidas National Park.
Flora
Sal and bamboo forests are the prominent vegetation covers of the region.
Fauna
The important animal species of the park include neelgai, sambar deer, gibbons, tiger, leopard,
porcupine, chinkara, civet, panthers, buffalos, elephants, wild dogs, wild boar, spotted deer, leopard
cats, sloth bears, etc. Different reptile species such as monitor lizard, python, tortoise, crocodile,
cobra, etc. also inhabit this park.
Avian fauna
The park is home to different colourful birds such as crimson breasted barbets, parrots, blue
kingfishers, wagtails, bulbuls, racket-tailed drongos, golden hooded oriole, Indian Pitta Rufus-
Treepie, golden hooded oriole, Egyptian vulture, Indian white-rumped vulture, etc.
Tourist information
Very scanty accommodation facilities are available within Sanjay National Park. Better quality
lodges, guest houses, hotels are available at Sindh, Varanasi, Rewa, etc.
Breaking of flowers, teasing and feeding of animals, carrying transistors and combustible items and
littering inside the park is strictly prohibited with hefty penalty. The visitors should preferably wear
dark clothes such as khaki or olive green shades. Avoid wearing flashy and bright coloured dresses in
the park as it may distract wild animals.
Getting there
The nearest railway stations and bus terminals are at Sidhi and Shahdol. The closest airport is at
Varanasi.
