SARISKA NATIONAL PARK – Rajasthan, India

Sariska National Park is situated along the foothills of Aravalli ranges in Alwar district of Jaipur in Rajasthan. The total area coverage of the park is approximately 800 sq km.

History of the park
During the early 18th and 19th century, the park area used to be a private hunting reserve for the Royal family of Rajasthan. It was ascribed a wildlife sanctuary status in 1955. In 1979 it was notified a tiger reserve and in 1982 it was declared a national park.

Flora
Dry deciduous forest is the prime vegetation cover of the region. Khair, tendu, dhok and ber are important tree species here.

Fauna
Leopards, Indian tigers, crocodiles, chital, wild boar, water snakes, rhesus monkeys, etc. are prominent fauna species here.

Avian fauna
The avian world of the park consists of bush quail, great Indian horned owl, tree pie, crested serpent eagle, sand grouse and many more.

Getting there
The closest railhead is located at Alwar (approximately 37 km away). The Jaipur Sanganer Airport (at Sanganer) is the nearest aerodrome (about 107 km away). Sariska National Park lies on the Delhi- Alwar-Jaipur Road. From Alwar, it can be reached via NH-8 and from Jaipur one can reach through the Shahpura – Bairath – Thanagazi route.

Tourist information
The Nilkanth Temple, the ancient Kankawadi Fort, the Sariska Palace and the Pandupol Hanuman Temple (believed to be built by the Pandavas, the mythological characters of Mahabharata) are some of the historical spots within the reserve worth visiting.
The visitors can find accommodation at the Sariska Palace, hunting lodge and few other resorts are located inside the park.
Visitors are required to carry their own ID proof while entering the park. Private vehicles are allowed inside the park but it has to be driven along the designated main tracks. During the monsoon season entry is restricted to only Tuesdays and Saturdays (between 8 am and 3 pm).
