Satpura National Park is located in the Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh. It
covers an area of about 524 sq km.
About the park
The park was established in 1981 to preserve the tiger population of the area. It is
spread along the ancient Satpura ranges and so it is named after the Satpura hills.
Flora
Sal is the endemic flora of the region. The other important tree species of the park
include tendu, bel, bamboos, mahua and teak. Grassland and some medicinal plants are
found in patches in the park.
Fauna
The animal world of the park comprises of Tigers, Spotted Dear, Leopards, Black buck,
Smooth otter, Wild dog, Wild boar, Marsh crocodile, Chowsingha, Gaurs, Languars,
Porcupine, etc. Black bucks and Indian Giant squirrels are the prime attractions here.
Avian fauna
The important bird species of the park are Malabar Pied Horn Bills, Crested Serpent
Eagles, Hornbills, Honey Buzzards, Peacock, etc.
Tourist information
There are very few private resorts, hotels and guest houses located inside the park. Boat,
elephant and jeep safaris are popular tourist activities of the Satpura National Park.
For jeep safaris, private jeeps can be hired from the hotels itself or from the market in
the Pachamahri area. Jeeps more than 5 years old are not allowed to enter inside the
park. Photo Id proof is required while entering the park.
Getting there
The nearby railheads are Sohagpur (about 18km away) and Hoshangabad (about 45km
away). However, the Pipariya (about 40km) and Itarsi (about 65 km) railway stations
are the important ones as major trains halt here. The closest aerodrome is in Bhopal
(about 220 km away). The nearest bus terminal is also in Bhopal (about 190 km). The
Madhai entrance gate falls on the Jabalpur-Hoshangabad road and can be easily reached
from Pachamahri and Sohagpur.
