Save Trees
Life on earth is possible because of the oxygen in earth’s atmosphere. The main source of oxygen in our
planet is the huge reserves of trees and plants. So we can see that the trees and plants play a great role
in the survival of man on earth. This is the reason why we need to save trees.
However, in pursuit of technological and scientific advancement, man seems to have forgotten the
importance of trees and plants in his life. Today, he is recklessly clearing forests and cutting down trees
to meet his needs for timber and fuel, building settlements, industrial interests, etc. In doing so he is
digging his own grave. When we lose a tree we also lose out on many other things that it gives us.
Importance of trees
We need to save trees at all cost because they are one of the valuable gifts of nature to humanity. One
of the main functions of trees is that they keep our atmosphere clean by producing oxygen in its gaseous
form and removing the harmful carbon dioxide gas from the air during the process of photosynthesis. It
is estimated that in a year, an acre of mature trees can provide the required oxygen to almost 18
people. Further, a tree in its lifetime of about 50 years can provide oxygen worth around $31,250. They
filter harmful gases and keeps dust and pollution levels under control, especially in the urban areas.
Approximately forty to fifty trees can remove around 80 pounds of the air pollutants per year.
Trees act like stone walls in stopping sound, thereby reducing the noise pollution in the settlements in
its adjoining areas. We get food, spices, fruits, vegetables, etc. from trees and plants. Almost every part
of trees and plants, especially the leaves, are used for making myriads of medicines. Trees also provide
shelter to myriads of animals, birds and insects in the wild. They attract the clouds and cause rain in its
adjoining areas, thereby turning the temperature of the areas moderate. They are perceived as the best
global warming management and energy conservation technique as they reduce the need of air
conditioning during the summer by up to 50 percent.
They provide us with precious timber that is used for making furniture and other building purposes.
They are also good sources of storing and absorbing rainwater, thus preventing the instances of flash
flood during the rains. Trees prevent soil erosion by holding huge volumes of soil to one place. They act
as effective, natural barriers in breaking the force of wind, thus protecting the vegetation, houses,
farmland, etc. in the neighbouring areas.
Trees confer aesthetically pleasing and peaceful environment in the parks, streets, playgrounds and
other community venues. According to the Human-Environment Research Lab, trees are quite effective
in minimising violence level in the neighborhood.
It is because of the above benefits, trees and plants are regarded as valuable as gold and are referred to
as “Green Gold” on the earth. According to the USDA Forest Service, trees around a home enhance its
market value by 6% to 7% and add around 10% to its property value.
How to save trees
Reckless felling of trees in the past has given rise to several natural disasters such as landslides, global
warming, flood, drought, etc. It has also given rise to several epidemics. If we continue in this manner,
then very soon our beautiful planet will cease to exist. Small changes in our habits and daily activities
can save hundreds of trees across the globe.
As they say “waste not, want not”, so first of all we need to stop wasting paper and paper related
products such as facial tissues, paper kitchen towels, etc. Always use these items judiciously, as and
when needed. Replacing paper products with other material products is another way to protect the
greenery on earth. For example, paper bags can be replaced with jute bags for carrying our belongings.
If for any reason, a tree is cut then another plant has to be planted in the same area or in some other
places. As students we can use several social media platforms to create awareness about the campaign
of save trees among our friends and other people.
Trees maintain ecological balance in nature. When we clear forests we tend to disturb this balance of
nature. This in turn causes several natural disasters and epidemics. So when we save trees, we not only
show kindness to them but we also show kindness to our own lives because our life on earth is not
possible without trees and plants. So if we want our future generations to survive longer in this planet,
we need to make serious efforts to preserve trees and prevent them from being cut down.
