SHENDURUNY WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Shenduruny Wildlife Sanctuary is located at Pathanapuram in the Kollam district of Kerala. It is named after the Shenduruny tree, which grows in plenty in this area. The sanctuary is situated in the proximity of Kollam-Shencotta highway.

Notification: wildlife sanctuary on August 25, 1984.

Flora
Forest type: West coast tropical semi-evergreen and evergreen forest, west coast tropical forest, southern hilltop tropical evergreen forest and southern wet mixed deciduous forest. Trees: Shenduruny tree and others.

Fauna
Indian bison, Indian chevrotain, Indian elephant, barking deer, tiger, mouse deer, leopard, three- striped palm squirrel, etc.

Getting there
Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, approximately 70km away, is the nearest airport. Thenmala Railway Station is the closest railway station.

The nearest bus terminal is at Kollam, about 63km away. KSRTC operates buses to Thenkasi via Thenmala. From Thenmala Dam, Shenduruny Wildlife Sanctuary is located within a few kilometers.

Tourist Information
Dormitories are provided by the Forest Department for staying within the sanctuary with prior bookings (20 beds each for males and females).

Trekking, elephant safaris, butterfly safaris, nature walk, rock climbing, mountain biking and valley crossing are main tourist recreational activities here. An artificial lake situated within the sanctuary between the Kulathupuzha and Shenduruny River is an ideal spot for picnic and boating. It is also an important place to spot elephants.

Stone Age caves situated towards the north-west side of the River Shenduruny is an important archeological and tourist spot. The deer rehabilitation center of the sanctuary is worth visiting.
