SHETTIHALLI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Shettihalli Wildlife sanctuary is situated in Shimoga district of Karnataka. It was established as a wildlife sanctuary on 23 November, 1974. The sanctuary comprises three zones - a tourism zone (57.6 sq. km), a buffer zone (237.4 sq. km) and a core zone (100.6 sq. km).

Flora
Forest type: dry and moist deciduous forests (central and eastern parts) and semi-evergreen forests (western parts).
Major tree species: silver oak, teak, Indian Thorny Bamboo, Calcutta bamboo, Asan, Tectona Grandis, Sweet Indrajao, Amla, etc.

Fauna
Tiger, sambar, leopard, spotted deer, wild dog, gaur, jackal, elephant, bonnet macaque, Malabar giant squirrel, striped-necked mongoose, pangolin, porcupine, rat snake, python, cobra and marsh crocodile.

Avian Fauna
Flycatchers, Munias, Hornbills, Bulbuls, Kingfishers, Babblers, Parakeets, Partridges, Woodpeckers, etc

How to Get There
Closest airports to Shettihalli Wildlife sanctuary are situated in Mangalore (approx. 200 km away) and Bangalore. The closest bus stop and railway terminal are situated at Shimoga. Regular bus services are available between Sagar and Shimoga.

Tourist Information
A rest house situated on the edge of the Linganamakki can be availed for accommodation with prior booking with the forest authorities. Trekking, bird and animal watching, swimming in the notified places and photography are popular past times of the tourists in the sanctuary. Shankargudda is the highest peak in the sanctuary with an elevation of about 1031m above sea level.
Shettihalli sanctuary houses different tourist attraction spots such as Lion and Tiger Safari at Thyavarekoppa, Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary, Elephant camp at Sacrebyle. It is always advisable to wear proper shoes, comfortable clothes with olive green or khaki shades. Avoid wearing heavy jewellery, strong perfumes and flashy clothes. Always remain calm and follow the designated path so that you do not get lost.
