SHIVARAM WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Shivaram Wildlife Sanctuary is located at the Adilabad district of Andhra Pradesh. The
sanctuary is situated along the banks of River Godavari. It is spread over an area of about 36.29
sq km. The sanctuary was established in the year 1987 for the conservation of fresh water
crocodiles or Mugger.
Flora
The vegetation here is primarily a Riverine forest mixed with thorny shrubs. The important tree
species are Bamboo, Teak, Gumpena, Timan, Kodsha, etc.
Fauna
The prime attraction of the Shivaram Wildlife Sanctuary is the Marsh Crocodile. The other
mammal species are Tiger, Rhesus Monkey, Langur, Sloth Bear, Sambar, Cheetal, Panther, etc.
Getting there
The closest airport to the sanctuary is the Warangal airport. The closest railway station is
located about 50 km away at Mancherial. The closest bus terminal is at Manthani in Karimnagar
District (almost 10 km away).
Tourist information
Comfortable accommodation facilities are available at the guest house at Eklaspur and
Mancherial. The transit point to the sanctuary is at Mancherial.
The excursions to Karimnagar and Manthani district should never be missed by the tourists. It is
always advisable to hire your own car for the jungle safari. The tourists need to be present at
the entry gate at least half an early, as the entry formalities generally takes some time.
The tourists are advised not to venture close to the river banks as the Marsh Crocodile, unlike
the salt water crocodiles, can crawl for sizeable distances on land. Swimming in the rivers of the
sanctuary is strictly prohibited for the tourists. Always follow the designated path and do not
venture in unknown tracts.
